Firefly Counselling Services respects the privacy of all clients. The information you provide the Counsellor, as well as the information collected in the counsellor’s notes, is considered “personal information” as defined by the Privacy Act 1988 (“the Act”). This information is used solely for the purpose of registering you for counselling services.
The intended recipient of this information is Firefly Counselling Services. All personal information gathered during the provision of counselling services will be kept confidential and secure. However, there are certain limitations to this confidentiality:
1. If the information is subpoenaed by a court of law, or
2. If failure to disclose the information would place you or another person at risk, or
3. If your prior consent has been obtained to:
i. Provide a written report to another professional or agency (e.g., a GP or lawyer); or
ii. Discuss the information with another person (e.g., a parent or employer); or
iii. If the disclosure is otherwise required or authorised by law.
4. If the counsellor is undergoing supervision, they may discuss your case in a de-identified manner with a qualified supervisor. Supervision is a vital part of ensuring that counsellors are providing high-quality care and are supported in their professional development while maintaining confidentiality.
Providing this information is voluntary, but if it is not provided, Firefly Counselling Services may not be able to offer you the full range of services. You have the right to access and correct any personal information we hold about you, in accordance with the Act. All information collected by Firefly Counselling Services will be securely stored and protected.
